The weather on the morning of the swim was dry. The wind speed was 12 – 14 Knots (Force 4) in the bay which backed from NW to W during the swim. Swimmers head almost directly North to cross Galway bay from Aughinish, Clare to Salthill. This meant that the swimmers were swimming against the wind for the first half of the crossing before the wind backed to a more Westerly direction. This made for very challenging conditions for the swimmers as a Westerly swell rolled into the bay from the Atlantic with wave heights of 1 – 2 metres in the middle section of the swim.
64 swimmers crossed Galway Bay, (48 solo swimmers, 6 relay teams (16 relay team swimmers)
